If you grew up in a household with roots in Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, or anywhere in the Middle East, you’ve heard the “Big Three.” Since birth, the path was laid out: You will be a Doctor, an Engineer, or… well, let’s not talk about the third option.

Our parents wanted safety. They wanted prestige. In the homeland, those titles were the only guaranteed tickets to a stable life. But here in Australia, in 2026, that “Safety Net” is becoming a “Golden Cage.”
The World is Bigger Than the Hospital and the Construction Site
While we will always need brilliant Muslim doctors and engineers, our community is currently “under-represented” in the rooms where the biggest decisions are made. If we want to thrive in Australia, we need more than just stethoscopes and hard hats.
We need the “Hidden Experts”:
-
⚖️ The Political Scientist: Who is going to advocate for our community’s rights in Canberra?
-
🧠 The Social Scientist: (Like your path in Counseling!) Who is going to heal the intergenerational trauma and mental health struggles unique to our culture?
-
💡 The Inventor & Pure Scientist: Who is going to solve the climate crisis or invent the next medical breakthrough, rather than just practicing the old ones?
-
🎨 The Master Storyteller: (Badayel House style!) Who is going to ensure our face in the media isn’t a stereotype, but a complex, human reality?
-
💻 The IT Architect: Not just “tech support,” but the people building the AI and the Ethical Digital Infrastructure of the future.
Why “Figtree” Celebrates the Non-Traditional
One of the main reasons I built the Figtree Directory is to give a platform to the “Niche Professionals.”
When you look at our 17 categories, you’ll see space for the Counselor, the Consultant, the Artist, and the Social Innovator. We want to show the next generation that “Success” isn’t just a title your parents can brag about at a dawat—it’s about the impact you have on your community.
🌟 To the Parents: Let Them Lead
To the parents reading this: If your child has the heart of a poet, the mind of a politician, or the hands of an inventor—don’t force them into the clinic. The most “Halal” career is the one where they use their God-given talents to serve humanity with excellence (Ihsan).
