Our Roots & Legacy

Crescent Times (2008–2011): Australian Muslim newspaper founded by Tarek Chamkhi, published 30 issues from Mirrabooka, WA.

Figtree Directory is a proud initiative of Badayel House Pty Ltd. which was founded in 2016 by Tarek Chamkhi—a filmmaker, event manager, and community advocate—Badayel House has always been about “Alternatives” (the meaning of Badayel).

The journey continued as a creative hub producing films, festivals, and running an online modest fashion store:

Our journey toward building this directory truly began in the red dust of the Australian Outback.

G’day Cameleers (2018): Documentary highlighting the Afghan pioneers’ legacy of trust, service, and connection in the Outback.

In 2018, Badayel House produced the documentary “G’day Cameleers,” directed by Tarek Chamkhi. This film explored the incredible, often forgotten legacy of the Afghan pioneers who arrived in the 1860s. These men were the original “Essential Workers” of Australia—reliable transport providers who crossed the harshest terrains to deliver medicine, news, and supplies.

They didn’t just move cargo; they moved Trust (Amanah).

Watching their footprints in the sand, we realized that the modern Muslim community in Australia carries that same DNA of “The Provider.” Figtree Directory was created to honor that legacy by mapping the “Digital Outback” of 2026. Just as the Cameleers were the custodians of physical connection, we are the Custodians of Professional Connection.
